Handling Characteristics of 2011 Chevy Silverado Equipped with Firestone Air Springs, Part # F2250
Question:
I HAVE A 2011 SILVERADO 1500 CREW CAB. IF THE AIR BAGS ARE DEFLATED, WILL THIS AFFECT THE RIDE? RE MAKE IT RIDE STIFFER WHEN THE TRUCK IS EMPTY?

Expert Reply:
Adjustable air springs like the Firestone Ride-Rite Rear Air Helper Springs, part # F2250, can be tuned to match the load on the tow vehicle at any given time, but they cannot be operated when completely deflated.
The air bags can be damaged if used without at least 5 psi pressure. Please note that no product of this type can increase the weight carrying capacity of your vehicle.
This particular kit is not suitable for the Silverado 1500, only for 2500 and 3500 series trucks. The correct kit for your Silverado 1500 is the Firestone # F2430. I have provided the written instructions as well as a video link demonstrating installation in a 2011 Silverado.
I have also provided a link to all rear suspension products offered for your 2011 Silverado 1500. These include the air spring, jounce spring and leaf spring types. Air springs offer the advantages of the smoothest ride quality and adjust-ability, which is helpful for off-center and widely-varying loads; jounce springs offer lower cost and simpler installation and have virtually no effect unless the vehicle is under load;
leaf springs help reduce suspension sag and reduce sway by as much as 30 percent.
I have included two articles on suspension kits that might be helpful as you evaluate your options.
