Which Tow Rating Do I Use For The Trailer Hitch Receiver On My 2021 Mazda CX-5?
Question:
The CX5 is rated lower both in max tongue weight and towing capacity from the factory than many of these hitches. Is it really possible to raise these numbers safely without damaging the car?

The ratings that a manufacturer puts on a hitch are the capacities that they have tested the receiver to be able to withstand. The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76138 that fits your 2021 Mazda CX-5 has a rating of 675lbs of tongue weight and 4,500lbs of trailer towing capacity. This is what Draw-Tite says is the absolute most the receiver can handle without damage to the receiver.
Mazda rates the towing capacity of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 with a towing capacity of 2,000lbs. This is the most that Mazda says the CX-5 can tow without risking damage to parts of the vehicle. Without knowing exactly what the limiting factors are of the Mazda that determine its rating it is impossible to know exactly if the towing capacity can be increased by modifying the CX-5.
You should always use the lower of the 2 sets of numbers that you have when using aftermarket parts. This will ensure that you do not void any warranties or cause damage to your Mazda.
