Parts Needed to Install a Brake Controller on a 1996 Toyota 4Runner with a Factory 4-Way
Question:
I have a hitch but I dont know if it was original equipment. Vehicle has a flat four plug. Do you know how I can tell if I have any OEM provisions for installing a brake controller? If there are none, do you provide instructions on your website for a virgin. I have a 16 ft dual axle travel trailer with electric brakes but it is a recent buy very used and I have not tried to tow it yet.

Since you have a 4-way on your 1996 Toyota 4Runner you are going to next need a Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 to convert the 4-way to a 7-way. This product comes with everything you will need to install a functioning 7-way with a brake controller. I attached installation instructions and an install video for you to check out also.
I also attached an FAQ article on how to install a brake controller from scratch that you should find informative.
For a brake controller we recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller # 90885 the most because of how easy it is to install and use. This brake controller is proportional which is preferred over the time-delayed controllers like the Tekonsha PowerTrac # 39523.
I attached an FAQ article on brake controllers for you to check out also that explains the difference between these controller types.
