Do Leaf Spring Hangers Need To Be Welded To Bottom Of Frame Or Can They Be Welded To The Side?

Question:

I am building a utility trailer out of an old popup camper frame. I was wondering if the hangers can be mounted to the side of the frame? The reason I am wondering is because the springs are the right distance if I mount the hanger on the side just below the wheel well where the frame is if I mount the hangers on the bottom the spring will be about a 1/2 inch short to the hanger. In the alternative is there an extension that could get to make it work?

Leaf spring hangers like the Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for 2" Slipper Springs - 3-3/4" Tall Front # APS6SE you were looking at need to be installed on the bottom of the frame, and installing them on the side of the frame would cause the axle to be the frame.

You could fabricate a bump out on the frame to give you a place for the hangers to mount if needed, but I recommend having a qualified welder do the welding as it will be what is keeping your axle connected to your trailer.

I included a video of the # APS6SE for you to take a look at.
