Does Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Require Stabilization Strap for Bike Rack on 2013 VW Passat Diesel

Question:

I am looking for a hitch for a 2013 Passat diesel to use primarily for attaching a hitch mount bike rack. Does this hitch require a support strap when using a hitch mounted bike rack like the Curt hitches do? I do not want to use a support strap due to potential finish damage, which kind of defeats the purpose of a hitch mount rack in the first place.

The Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24880 for the 2013 Volkswagen Passat diesel does NOT require the use of a stabilization strap when carrying non-trailer loads such as a bike rack. You will need a bike rack that is compatible with a Class I trailer hitch and you will be limited to 2 bikes maximum with any Class I hitch.

If you need a bike rack I recommend the Swagman Titan, # S63400. It is Class I compatible, holds 2 bikes, it can tilt down, and it comes with an integrated cable lock. The rise in the shank will also provide better ground clearance. I have included a video review of the rack for you. I have also included a video showing a typical installation of the trailer hitch.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame tube that goes straight across (like a typical mens bike) I recommend using the adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry the bikes more level and provide better ground clearance. I have included a link to a video showing how the adapter works.
