Recommended 4-Way and 4 to 7-Way Adapter for a 2016 BMW X5
Question:
I have a 2016 BMW X5 35ixdrive and I need a flat 4 harness to start. The trailer has extra lights as well. Then I need to convert to a 7 way because the trailer has a reverse lockout solenoid which needs to be wired to the reverse lights. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Mostly I understand the wiring except how to wire the reverse lights into the 7 way.

The best trailer wiring harness option for a 2016 BMW X5 is the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 119250KIT. The reason that this is the best trailer wiring harness option is because it does not require any splicing into the vehicle. Then, in order to convert this to a 7-way you'll want to use the 4 to 7-way with 4-way adapter part # ETBC7L. The yellow wire coming from the back of the adapter will need to be run and splice into the vehicles reverse light circuit (if applicable). The black wire will be run battery. The white wire will be run to a ground. The two 4-way will plug into one another.
Therefore, in all you only must splice into one wire on the vehicle and that's only if you need the reverse circuit for lights or an actuator lockout. I have attached an install video of the the 4-way portion on a similar year.
