Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Question:

I work at a group home and want to purchase a bike rack that will fit our 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. This one looks good to me do you recommend it for us? Thanks.

The Yakima KingJoe 3 Trunk Mount Carrier Y02620 is not compatible with the 2008 Grand Caravan with dual sliding doors. A comparable unit from Thule that is compatible is the Passage 3 Carrier, part # TH911XT.

Both share many common features: dual folding arms, 6-point attachment straps, soft padding to protect your vehicle finish, 3-bike carrying capacity, an anti-sway system, a lifetime warranty and a quick-install system to make mounting to your Grand Caravan a simple process. (Please note that both also prevent use of your rear wiper when the carrier is installed). The Thule carrier weighs a few pounds less than the Yakima but the two are otherwise fairly similar. Instructions for both are provided.

I also have linked a product page showing several 3-bike carriers from Thule including the TH911XT. As you go up to more advanced models you will find additional features such as sturdier construction, higher weight capacity and included locks for the bikes and/or for the carrier itself.

If your Grand Caravan happens to have a trailer hitch installed (visible under the rear bumper) you have the option to use a hitch-mounted bike carrier. The advantages of this type are that you are less likely to lose rear visibility, you retain use of your rear wiper and hitch-mount carriers often can fold down to provide clearance for opening the rear hatch. I have provided a link to our product page for hitch-mount 3-bike carriers in case this is an option for your vehicle and you wish to consider this instead of a trunk-mount type.

I have also included two articles concerning bike carrier types that may be helpful to you in your evaluation process.
