Can Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System Fit on a Single Axle Trailer to make a Tandem Axle Trailer

You can add the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System, # ASR1200S01, to your trailer in combination with your current axle, but there are a few factors that you will want to consider first. To add this system to your trailer, you will need to move your current axle either forward or backward to ensure that the weight of the trailer and any load is distributed to both axles properly.

I have attached a diagram that explains how to find the correct axle spacing for a tandem axle trailer to ensure proper weight distribution between the axles and tongue weight.

You do not want to simply install the Timbren system in front of or behind your current axle placement. If the weight capacity of your current axle is greater than 1,200 lbs, then I recommend using the Timbren Axle-Less system for the rear axle because the front axle will support the majority of the trailer load.

You will also want to consider the distance from the center of the spindle to the trailer frame and the amount of deflection. For example, the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System - 3,500 lbs, # ASR3500S05, will put the center of the spindle 4 inches below the bottom of the frame and it has a deflection of 1-3/4 inches. The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Leaf Spring - for 3,500 lb axles, # e54SR, will put the center of the spindle about 2 inches below the trailer frame if the axle is mounted above the spring or about 5 inches below the frame if mounted below the axle. This leaf spring also has a deflection of 1-1/2 inches. As you can see, the wheels and tires will sit at slightly different heights in relation to the trailer frame and the amount of deflection in the springs will be slightly different. This particular situation may not be the most ideal.

If possible, I would recommend adding two of the Axle-Less systems and removing your current axle. Adding two of these systems together will give your trailer a weight capacity of 2,400 lbs. The spindles on the Timbren system are compatible with the Dexter Hub Assembly, # 8-91-05UC1-EZ. This hub has a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern and includes all of the bearings, races, seals, cap and lug nuts.
