Recommended Higher Speed Rated Tires to Replace 12 Inch Tires on Small Trailer

Question:

Hello, I have a small trailer with 12 in tires. The speed limit seems to be 55 to 65 mph. If I put on 13 in tires will I be able to pull the trailer at a higher speed? on some of the ratings I have seen as high as 85mph. I would like to be able to tow safely at 70mph. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Kevin

The speed rating of the tire you use will dictate the top speed at which you can pull the trailer on the highway, not necessarily the diameter of the wheels you use.

If you were to go with a 12 inch tire with a higher speed rating like the Kenda # AM10130 S-Trail 145/R12 tire, you'll have a radial tire that will run cooler and more smoothly at highway speeds than a bias-ply tire would. Since excessive heat build up is the number one cause of premature tire wear and failure, a radial tire would certainly be the way to go for longer tire life. The tire carries an M speed rating, which is good up to 81 mph. Going this route would also allow you to retain your current wheels which would save you a few bucks. If you increase up to a 13 inch tire, you'll also need to replace the wheel.

If you had your heart set on increasing to a 13 inch tire, I'd recommend the Kenda Loadstar # AM3S120 which is a bias-ply tire mounted on a 13 inch wheel with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. The tire is a 175/80-13, which has an M (81 mph) speed rating.

I've linked to product videos for the items mentioned above.
