Could Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch 41990-07 Be Used As Front Mount Trailer Hitch On 1989 GMC P30 Van?
Question:
I need a front mounted at least category 3 trailer hitch for a 1989 P30 step van GMC. I know that there is no custom made one for this vehicle. My question is could one of your adjustable for motor home rear hitches be used for this purpose. I am specifically thinking of Drawtite model 41990-07 0r Drawtite Code 5350. I dont expect you to tell me that it would be ok but do you see anything wrong with this approach? Obviously I would have to weld or drill to match existing bolt holes as well as remove part of front bumper. This is for a food truck I am building for a friend who needs a place to mount a generator. I am fairly sure the weight would not be too much. Thanks for any advice you might have.

There is nothing wrong with using the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 41990-07 with 7" tall mounting brackets or # 41990-16 with 16" tall mounting brackets as a front mount trailer hitch receiver for your 1989 GMC P30 Step Van.
You are correct that may need to do some modifications to get the hitch to fit, but as long as your frame is not wider than 44" this should not be a problem.
I do recommend having a qualified welder weld the hitch to make sure it is structurally sound, and use their input and the ratings of the vehicle to determine the maximum tongue weight rating. Both hitches have a 1600lb tongue weight rating, but your van more than likely does not.
I included a video of the # 41990-16 and a picture showing these hitches being used as a front mount hitch for you to take a look at.
