Do i just need to disconnect the cable from the factory brake controller?

That is correct. You will just need Curt Assure Trailer Brake Controller with Adjustable Screen # C49UR along with Curt Custom Wiring Adapter # C51458 since you already have the factory brake controller hookup under the dash. I attached a short demonstration video.
