Is My Cargo Carrier Legal or Illegal?

Question:

My cargo carrier extends 4 1/2 feet out from the rear of my RV. Do I need lights? Also is that legal without legal?

From my research, I discovered that most states require brake lights on any accessory if the accessory blocks the view of the vehicle's taillights. As far as the legality of the length of the carrier extending from the rear of your RV, I recommend checking with your state's highway patrol documents.

If you need brake lights for your cargo carrier, I recommend the etrailer License Plate and LED Tail Light Mounting Kit for Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier # e98943-44LED. The kit also comes with a license plate mounting bracket that allows you to relocate your license plate to the front of your cargo carrier as well.

You will need a wiring harness in order to use the tail light kit. If you provide the year/make/model of your vehicle, I would be happy to assist you in the right harness.
