Comparing Curt Trailer Hitch C15809 and Draw-Tite DT45518 For 2012 Ram 3500

Question:

Hello, I am looking for a 2.5inch hitch so we can use a hitch extender for our camper. We will only be towing 5k lbs so it looks like you have DT45518 and C15809, so what are the advantages of each? I have slightly larger wheels on the truck, but the spare currently fits in its spot barely so I dont want to jeopardize carrying a spare. Also, the hitches that fit below the stock hitch are also listed for trucks without hitches, so can I assume we can remove the factory hitch when using one of these hitches so we dont have extra weight on the truck? Thanks! Truck is 2012 RAM 3500 CCLB 4x4.

The main differences between the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C15809 and the Draw-Tite # DT45518 for your 2012 Ram 3500 4WD Crew Cab Long Bed is the weight capacites.

The # C15809 has a 2700lb tongue weight rating and a 20000lb trailer weight rating where the # DT45518 only has a 1200lb tongue weight rating and a 12000lb trailer weight rating.

Both options will work with your spare tire as long as it is still the factory size, if it is a larger size it may not fit.

You are correct that both hitches will fit beneath the factory trailer hitch receiver, but they can also be used with the factory trailer hitch receiver removed.

Between the two I recommend the # C15809 due to it having a higher ratings even though you may not need them at the moment, and we have found that the powder coat finish on the Curt hitches is stronger meaning the hitch will stay looking good longer.

Since you mentioned needing an extension, I recommend the Curt Hitch Extension and Reducer for 2-1/2" Trailer Hitches # C45048 though you will need to cut it down and use it as a 24" extension to get a high enough rating to tow your 5000lb trailer.

I included videos for the # C15809 and # C45048 for you to take a look at.
