How To Install 7-way Connector In 2008 Ram 1500 With Factory 4-way Connector

Question:

2008 RAM 1500 I have the factory blue plug for a trailer brake controller and all the associated fuses in my fuse box. However at the bumper the factory installed connector is a 4pin and I do not see any wiring at the back for a 7pin. I know I can buy a 4pin to 7pin conversion kit with a wiring harness for the brake controller, charging power, etc but where does that wiring harness connect to if my fuse box is already fused for the wiring?

It sounds like your 2008 Ram 1500 has a factory 4-way connector instead of the factory 7-way connector.

To add a 7-way connector you will need the # ETBC7 which will plug into your 4-way connector and you will just need to make a few more connections. The black wire will be extended to the battery of your truck with the included 40 amp circuit breaker, the white wire will get grounded to the frame, and the blue wire will get run to the factory blue brake output wire that Dodge ran.

Since your truck did not come with the factory 7-way connector the blue brake output wire did not run all the way to the back of the truck, and stops at a connector behind the driver side wheel well.

Now that you have a 7-way connector you can install a trailer brake controller. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 due to it being an extremely reliable controller with great features like an easy to read LCD screen and built in diagnostics that are easy to read and understand.

To install the # 90195 you will need the plug in adapter # 3020-P which plugs directly in to the factory trailer brake controller port underneath the dash of your truck.

Doing this install will use all of the factory fused circuits with the exception of the 12v power to the 7-way connector.

I included a few videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
