Why To Get A Slider Hitch In A Short Bed Truck
Question:
I never used the slider kit when pulling my 5th wheel behind my F350 so I am wondering if I really need it on my 2020 Ram 2500. Both had the short box.

When installing a hitch the formula to figure out your turning clearance is as follows:
(A+B) - C = Clearance
A = Distance from center of fifth wheel hitch jaw to truck cab
B = Length of Sidewinder arm (ex: 16K = 22", 19K = 22")
C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)
Installing a slider like Curt Q25 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R24 Slider # C16566 with the Adapter Rails for Curt 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider - Ram Towing Prep Package # C16022 will allow for more turning clearance. If your bed size is the same in your Ram as it was in your Ford and you're comfortable with that amount of clearance then you can stick with a standard hitch like Curt A25 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package # C16046. Sliders and sidewinders are just an additional option for short bed trucks when needing more clearance but it all comes down to personal preference. Most hitch companies recommend taking your camper to an empty parking lot and practicing turns with someone else watching to make sure you don't accidentally hit the cab with your camper.
