To replace the lock cores in your Sportrack (which is owned by Thule) carrier, the key does have to be removed in order to install new Thule One-Key System Lock Cylinders # TH450200.
The reason for that is you have to use the master key in order to remove the lock cylinder, and the broken key would of course block you from doing that. The only thing you can do is drill out the lock core or have a locksmith come and drill it out for you to ensure your carrier isn't damaged.
