Replacing Aged Surge Brake Actuator With Electric Reverse Lockout Actuator on 1999 Boat Trailer
Question:
I am going to purchase a Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator 099-175-20 to replace my titan Aero 6000 disc brake actuator. The trailer is a 1999 4 winns with a removable tongue. I think the master cylinder is shot no fluid comes out and the piston seems seized, not going to mess with it, its 20 years old The current wiring is 4 wire flat. My tow vehicle has both a 7 pin and a 4 pin connections. Its a 2020 Jeep Gladiator with the tow package no controller there is a 4 wire extension that runs inside the tongue from the vehicle to the connector on the trailer there is also a quick connect for the hydraulic line near the same spot Also, as a side note, I think there might be a solenoid already in the tongue, there is an extra blue wire hanging down. Ill figure that out and remove it? when I take it apart to replace the coupler. What is the best way to do the wiring for this? I hope all this makes sense.

The Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-20 is a great choice for a replacement surge disc brake actuator. It sounds like your previous trailer brake actuator also had an electric lockout that was never connected or may have been removed.
To connect your trailer properly and allow you to use the reverse electric lockout on the Dexter actuator you will need the Hopkins 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector # HM47913. It features a built in tester that will help you with wiring issues you may have in the future. To connect this use the Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connector # DW05744-5 to ensure a waterproof connection.
For your 2020 Jeep Gladiator you will need the Adapter 7 Pole to 5 Pole Flat # A75TB.
Since the trailer is at the age it is before installing and trying to bleed your brakes I suggest inspecting your brake lines you have on the trailer. Be sure to inspect the rubber hoses as well as steel lines that you may or may not have on your trailer. If there is signs of damage or rot you will want to replace these now to ensure you don't run into issues and have to replace the lines and bleed the entire system again your first time out. We have several kits that will have different length main lines. Let me know what your length is to your axle or axles and I will recommend you a kit to replace all your lines if needed.
