Troubleshooting Tandem Axle Boat Trailer Equalizer Contacting Frame on Rear Spring

Rebuilt tandeem boat trailer does not seem level at equalizer 5 3/4 equalizer 3 inch straps spring seem a little long should i shorten up equalizer and straps tows good equalizer hitting frame on rear

There are a few things I would recommend checking before you start swapping parts.

First will be to check the weight distribution with the boat on the trailer. Typically when the rear is hitting the frame like you have the weight may be to much on the rear of the trailer and the boat should be moved forward or gear on the boat moved to better evenly distribute the weight across the entire trailer.

Second I would ensure that the boat trailer is pulling level when connected to the tow vehicle. If the tongue of the trailer is to high the trailer would squat more in the rear. You would be able to solve this by using a different drop ball mount that will pull the trailer more level. The Solid-Tow Adjustable 2-Ball Mount # DTSTBM6600-2S is also a great option if you tow multiple trailers of different heights.

Next I would check the suspension components for any kind of binding as they travel through the suspension range. The best way to do this would be lifting the trailer off the ground and supporting it by the frame. Then using a jack lift the front and rear jacks individually and ensuring they cycle through. Sometimes water can get into these moving parts and cause parts to seize to each other making it difficult for the suspension to work properly.

The 3" shackle straps do seem long but depending on the parts and construction may still be correct. Typically most tandem axle trailers will have 2-1/4" Straps # 018-024-01 or 2-5/8" Straps # 115052
