Expert Reply:
Yes, you are correct. Item # RM-524447-4 does require an external crossbar on your 2017 Lincoln MKX, which comes with certain compatible tow bars like Item # RM-522. The crossbar in some ways can be easier to use because you pull a clip from each side and the crossbar stays connected to the tow bar. When disconnecting from the vehicle, you just lift the crossbar off the brackets and fold the tow bar and crossbar up and store it as one unit on the back of the motor home. The tow bar can be removed from the crossbar as well. This is done when you are storing the tow bar and cross bar in a compartment under the motor home.
I have included a link to a demonstration of how the tow bar and the cross bar can is used and can be left on or removed from the tow bar.
If you are just setting up your vehicle to be flat towed it is going to require a few other items.
Item # RM-645 which are safety cables. These cable can be an through the channels on the tow bar which will keep them from dragging the ground.
Item # RM-152-98146-7 which is a wiring kit so your vehicle can receive light functions from the motor home.
Item # HM39524 which is a portable braking system. It is compatible with all baking systems on the motor home, is easy to install and set up. It is a small light weight unit the can be easily stored in a small compartment when not is use.
