Question:
Are the jaws supposed to close all the way or is there supposed to be a small gap when locked in on the Reese 30047 hitch.

In regards to a Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch like part # RP30047, the 1/4" gap between the jaws is normal with the trailer coupled. The diameter inside the jaws while uncoupled is less than 2" which is the diameter of the kingpin therefore a gap will be present while coupled. This is so that the jaws can have a tight grip on the kingpin which provides a smoother ride.
