Can Self-Adjusting Electric Brakes be Used on 3,500 lb Dexter Axle
Question:
replacement brakes for Dexter #10 3,500 lb axle. I have a 1994 Top Line cargo trailer that has been converted to a toy hauler. It has the above listed axels in tandem with Torsion bar suspension with the front axel having electric brakes. I believe these are 5 on 4-1/2 hub with 14 inch wheels. From what I have read, the replacement brakes would be for 10inch x 21/4inch ? If so, what I would like to do is purchase the correct replacement assemblies for these axels. I would like to retain the original hubs provided that there is enough material for machining.? I will confirm before purchase Q: is it possible to upgrade to self-adjusting brakes even though I would be using my original hubs? Should I consider this? Q My trailer weighs in at 3,800 lbs empty, and with Polaris 900 weighs in at 1,450 lbs. With all equipment and gear, Im at about 5,500 lbs. I believe Im ok with these weight totals as the tow vehicle is a 2017 GMC 1500 has no trouble stopping it. your thoughts?

You can absolutely use self-adjusting electric brakes on your trailer with 3,500 lb Dexter axles; the fact they are self-adjusting won't be a limiting factor at all, they just need to fit your hub. A 3,500 lb Dexter axle will use a 10" x 2-1/4" hub and drum, just like you mentioned, though you should verify that your drum is that size just to make sure.
Also be sure that you have the correct brake flange; it should have bolt holes 2-7/8" apart on center, like the Brake Mounting Flange # 4-35. If so, then you can use self-adjusting electric brakes and mounting hardware, with the correct fit being the following:
- Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies # AKEBRK-35-SA
- Mounting Hardware for 10" Brake Assemblies # BRKH10B
In regards to the weight totals, your 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 does have the needed capacity to tow 5,500 lbs so there is no issue in that regard.
