I definitely recommend The Curt # C12100 for your 2016 Subaru Forester. It is rated to 3,500 pounds towing and is rated 4 out of 10 for the install difficulty. I have included a link to an install on a 2016 Forester as well.
With this being a 1 1/4 inch hitch, it can be a little limiting for accessories like bike racks or cargo carriers and the like. Another good option would be etrailer.com's class 3 hitch with a 2 inch receiver, # e98839. The install would end up being exactly the same, but would end up giving you more options for said accessories. I have included a video of this being installed on a 2018 Forester as well.
Another part that may be needed is wiring. The plug and play Tekonsha T-One Wiring Harness # 118467 with the 4 Flat plug requires no cutting or splicing and works with trailers that also have a 4 Flat plug.
