There are a few reasons why you might appear to need longer chains. First, it should be noted that typically you want 5 links from the hanger to the chain. There are several factors that could lead to the chains not being long enough. First, if you have a tall frame, you may need more links so that the bars are not making contact with the frame. If the frame is taller than 6 inches, you will want to use different chain hangers, # RP58305.

Another factor that could lead you to believe longer chains are required would be if the system is not properly set up. This could mean that the brackets are not in the correct location or the head is not tilted properly. You will want to look over the instructions, linked for reference, one more time to make sure you have the brackets in the right place and the head tilted properly. I have also included a link to a video that will help.

Basically, if the ball on the weight distribution head is pointed down too much, the spring bars will be at a more downward angle from front to back and that would require more chain links. Tilting the head back towards the vehicle will angle the bars up more and you would use less chain.
