How to Tell if Trailer Brakes Are Skidding When Setting Up Brake Controller

Question:

Following the instructions, it’s hard to tell if the brakes are locking up or just engaging. When going 25mph and activating the switch, my trailer jerks. Does that mean I’m locking up or just activating. Do I adjust so as to feel no jerking? Or do I adjust until my tires start smoking.

A trailer tire (or any tire, for that matter) gets its best traction at the point just before it skids. If you're feeing a noticeable pull from the trailer when you activate the manual brake switch on the P2 # 90885 brake controller, chances are the tires aren't skidding. If you're running with your windows open, you'd likely hear the squeal from the tires, but the sure way to find out is to look for skid marks where you apply the brakes or have a helper standing by next to where you apply the brakes. A large empty parking lot is the best place to get your controller properly set up. You'll have lots of room and you'll be able to safely get the vehicle up to 20 or 25 miles per hour.
