In order to choose the correct weight distribution system for your needs, confirming the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your Airstream is very important. If you should determine that your trailer tongue weight falls in between 500 and 800 lbs, the Reese Strait-Line System, part # RP66083 is the best performing weight distribution and sway control system we offer. Rather than acting against trailer sway once its begun, the Strait-Line literally forces the trailer to stay in line behind the trailer. The trailer will still corner smoothly, but crosswinds and turbulence caused by passing vehicles will not be able to move the trailer.

The Reese Steadi-Flex system, like part # RP66559 is a lower-priced alternative. The system is effective on trailer tongue weights ranging from 50000-1000 lbs. The integrated sway control feature works well, but it is a dependent system that acts against sway once it starts and is therefore less effective than the Strait-Line. On the plus side, it has fewer moving parts and therefore is easier to set up.

An entry-level system like the Pro Series # PS49901 is effective on trailer tongue weights up to 550 lbs. The system features a proven round-bar weight distribution system coupled with a basic friction sway control unit. The friction sway unit is designed to resist mild trailer sway, but would need to be deactivated when traveling on icy pavement or when backing.

The weight distribution function of the good, better and best options presented above are pretty similar. The reason for the price differential is the differences in effectiveness of the sway control portions of these systems. To determine which system would be best for your needs, try taking your Airstream out for a few test runs on different roadways. How does the trailer react to crosswinds on the freeway? How about when those tractor trailers pass in the other direction on a two lane road? Are you planning cross country trips or are you planning on staying within a few hundred miles of home? Your answers to all these questions will determine which system will be best for you.

All three systems include the weight distributing shank, but the Strait-Line and Steadi-Flex systems do not include the trailer ball. If you need a 2-5/16 inch ball, use the # 19286 or # A-90 for a 2 inch ball. The Pro Series system includes a 2-5/16 inch ball.
