Carrying 19 Foot Canoe on Yakima Overhaul HD Ladder Rack on 2021 Toyota Tacoma

Question:

What is the maximum distance you can get between crossbars? We have 19 foot ABS canoe we would like to carry. Like the option to adjust height so bow will clear cab. Or any suggestions for other bed racks.

It depends on how you're installing it! I installed two versions of the Yakima Overhaul HD on a 2021 Toyota Tacoma with a 5' bed. The OverHaul HD is always my favorite recommendation since it's a super solid ladder rack that looks and works perfectly on the Tacoma.

The version that mounts to the utility tracks # Y01151-5868 has a maximum crossbar spread of 40". You can see that measurement around the 3:20 minute mark in the video I attached below. For the version that installs onto tonneau covers # Y01151-5855, the exact measurement depends on the tonneau cover, but you can get around 48".

I called my friend in Yakima and she said that they recommend 32" for boats that are 12'-14' long. For your 19-foot canoe, they said that 40' of crossbar spread is still an approved fit. However, if you want a little extra support, I have two options for you.

The first option is to get a third crossbar for your cab. You can get a single Jetstream crossbar # 8880633, two towers # 8880618, and a BaseClip Fit Kit # Y06145 that install towards the front of your naked roof. You can also replace the Jetstream bar with a single HD crossbar # Y35FR plus HD adapters # Y03541.

The second option is to use a load extender like the Yakima LongArm # Y01149 plus extension # Y01150. or the Malone Axis Load Extender # MAL32VR. I personally prefer the Malone Axis, since it gets the job done at a really good price. The roller will also help with rolling the kayak onto your ladder rack. However, if you want more fine tuned adjustments and want to stick with the Yakima brand, then the Yakima LongArm is still a great choice.

All in all, you will be fine with just the OverHaul HD ladder rack. If you want quick and easy extra support, then I recommend picking up the load extender to pop into your hitch whenever you're hauling the canoe. The extra crossbar is more permanent, but will also give you more support.
