I have a solution for you, but because your 2004 VW Beetle is a convertible you cannot use a trunk-mounted bike rack since there is nowhere for the bike rack to attach to. Instead, I recommend installing a trailer hitch receiver if you do not have one, then you can install a bike rack onto the receiver. For a receiver you will want to go with Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver Class I - 1-1/4" # 24679. This has a max tongue weight capacity of 200lbs.
You will be limited to a 2-bike carrier since the trailer hitch receiver for your vehicle is Class 1 rated, meaning it cannot handle excess weight of a 3rd or 4th bike. For a 2-bike carrier I would look into the Hollywood Racks Destination Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # HLY94FR. This is a very versatile carrier that works with many different types of bikes, including bikes with fenders or baskets. This fits bike tires that are up to 3" wide and the carrier can be folded up when not in use, saving space in your garage or parking spot.
If you have a bike with tires wider than 3" or would simply like a hanging-style bike rack, then you will instead want to go with the Swagman Titan 2 Bike Rack for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting # S63400. This allows you to hang most any bike by the frame, despite what size the tires are. It works with bikes that have fenders or baskets since it does not interfere with the wheels in any way. It has a tilt feature which allows trunk access on most vehicles (with bikes removed from carrier). One thing to keep in mind on this Swagman bike rack is that if you plan to haul women's, children's, step-thru, or other oddly-shaped bikes then you will need to add Adapter Bar # 64005.
I attached demonstration videos for you to check out, including an installation video for the trailer hitch receiver.
