For a 2009 Mazda Tribute the most popular brake controller, and the one I recommend, is the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. This controller is reliable, easy to use, and easy to set up.
To install the controller you will first need to have a 4-Way trailer wiring harness on the vehicle, # 118551, if it does not already have one. I have included a link to the instructions and a link to a video showing a typical installation for you.
Next you will need a 4 and 7-Way installation kit # ETBC7. This provides the 7-Way and the wiring and other accessories needed to install the brake controller. I have included some links that explain the installation of the ETBC7 for you.
