Can I Use the Tekonsha Prodigy in a 2012 Toyota Tacoma and Trailer With Electric Brakes
Question:
2 questions first. I have a 2012 Tacoma double cab 4x4 4.0 liter and am looking for an electric brake controller for 17 ft camper with 10x2 electric brakes. Which tekonsha model would you suggest. I have the factory 7way connector. Your video showed #90885-3040-p. But in the description it says electric over hydraulic. Second question, I have a triton tr128 aluminum atv trailer single axle , reliable axle running load e 2056510 tires. Is there a electric brake set up for this trailer? Thanks

The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 and plug in adapter # 3040-p are a great choice for your trailer; this unit is capable of working with both electric and electric over hydraulic brakes the same, so it'll work well for your camper with electric brakes.
For brakes, you'll need to likely change the hubs on your trailer to accommodate trailer brakes and you will need to make sure that your axle has brake mounting flanges on them to determine if the trailer is capable of accepting brakes. As long as you've got those then you could add brakes to the trailer.
For that you would need to remove the hubs and check to see what bearings are in there. You've probably got smaller hubs considering you're running 10" wheels so you're likely going to end up with a 7" brake assembly like the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 7" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 2,000 lbs # AKEBRK-2. You would also need to redo the wiring and add a 7 way connector like the # e99011, some 12 gauge wiring # 12-1-1 and heat shrink butt connectors like the # DW05745-5 to make the wiring connections.
If you can check your hubs to determine what bearings are in there we can also help you locate those that can be used with a new brake assembly. I've also linked an installation video of the Tekonsha controller for you to check out.
