Tekonsha P3 Does Not Power On Installed on a 2000 Ford F-250 with Factory Tow Package
Question:
Purhcased a new Tekonsha p3 with a harness for 2000 Ford F250 part 3035-P. When installing the device, my understanding is that when you connect the harness to the vehicle and the other end to the P3 that it should turn on by itself? On my Ford nothing happens - the device remains without power. Any suggestions or ideas? I have tried turning on the ignition as well as the engine but nothing happens. No tailer is connected, although the truck has the tow package installed.

The first couple of things to check are very easy. Since your truck has the factory tow package it could be as simple as a missing or blown fuse on the circuit used to power a brake controller. Use the owners manual and/or legend on the power distribution box lid to find the fuse locations related to the tow package wiring and replace any that are needed.
You can also use a circuit tester like # PTW2979 if needed to test the black wire behind the controller. If there is no power on the black wire then there is either a problem with the truck wiring or a bad fuse (or relay if equipped). If there is power to the black wire yet the controller does not power on, make sure that the ground (white wire) is intact.
If power is getting to the controller but it will not turn on then there is a problem inside the controller and it will need to be replaced. I have included an additional FAQ link on troubleshooting brake controllers for you.
