Parts Needed To Convert Electric Brakes To Electric Over Hydraulic On 2019 Grand Design Solitude
Question:
Looking for a disk brake conversion kit for a2019 Grand design 5th wheel with Dexter 5200 lb axles. I would prefer to use the installed factory brake controller in the 2018 Ram 2500. I do not see a compatible “ kit” listed in your web site, do you offer such?, or buy the individual components? What is your recommendation?

There is not a complete kit to convert the electric trailer brakes on your 2019 Grand Design Solitude with Dexter 5200lb axles to disc brakes, but I would be happy to recommend the parts you will need.
Starting with the brakes I recommend the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12" Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Stainless Steel - 5,200 lbs to 6,000 lbs # K2R526S which is sold per axle. This includes the rotor, caliper, mounting bracket, and pads.
Next you will need to replace the drums on your axle to idler hubs. There are a few different bearing combinations for Dexter 5200lb axles so you will need to confirm which bearing combination your spindles use. The easiest way to do this is by removing one hub and looking for the bearing number stamped in the face of each bearing as shown in the included picture of the # L44649.
For example the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-213-5UC1-EZ uses inner bearing # 25580 and outer bearing # LM67048 so if this matches your bearings this would be a great option. If you have a different bearing combination just let me know.
Next you will need hydraulic brake lines to run from the brake assemblies to the tongue of the trailer. I recommend the HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Tandem Axle - 25' Long, 3/16" Main Line # HS496-252.
You will also need a break away kit of which I recommend the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger # 20400.
For a electric over hydraulic disc brake actuator I recommend HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes # HBA16 which HydraStar has mentioned will work with the integrated trailer brake controller in your 2018 Ram 2500, but using the factory controller is very hit or miss. Your best bet to not have issues would be to use the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which is compatible with EOH brakes. You can use the Plug-in adapter # 3024-P to connect the # 90195 to your truck, but you will need to have your local Ram dealer flash the TIPM before switching to the # 90195.
I included videos for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
