Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch With Sway Control For 7,500 lb Trailer & Lifted Truck

Question:

Hi. I have a 2016 Ford F-150 3.5 Ecoboost with a 6 inch lift. I’m towing a travel trailer with a 500 lb hitch weight and 7500 GWVR. Will you recommend a weight distribution hitch w/ sway control and a drop? Thank you.

We can definitely get you set up with a weight distribution hitch with sway control for your lifted truck and a trailer with a 7,500 lb GVWR. Since you'll likely need a significant drop, let's go ahead and start with the best hitch for you, which is from Reese:

- Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution With Sway Control # RP66074

This hitch is properly rated, provides fantastic sway control, and does not come with a shank, allowing you to purchase the correct one separately instead of getting a system with a shank and paying for something you don't need. The Strait-Line is also fantastic because it has the best sway control you can get, with a completely unique dual-cam system that proactively stops sway before it even starts, so you'll have the safest, most controlled towing experience.

Okay, the next thing you will need is the correct shank for the Strait-Line # RP66074, and that is going to depend on the exact drop you need. In order to determine this you will need to measure from the ground to the top of your truck's hitch receiver, and from the ground to the bottom of your trailer coupler. However much higher your hitch receiver is will be the amount of drop you need. Shanks can be used from different manufacturers, and the shank option with the largest possible drop for a trunnion bar system like the Strait-Line is the following:

- Maximum Drop of 15-3/4": Curt Weight Distribution Shank # C17125

The only other thing you will need with your system is a hitch ball, with the correct fit being the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # 19286.
