Recommended Weight Distribution System for 3600 lb Pontoon Boat/Trailer

Question:

I am picking up a pontoon boat with my 2019 Ford Explorer. The fully loaded out weight of the boat is 3600 lbs so well under the 5000. I have a surge controller and trailer has surge brakes. What is your recommendation for a weight distribution hitch as this is recommended by Ford.

Assuming the 3600 lb figure you mentioned includes the weight of the trailer, the tongue weight will be somewhere between 360-550 lbs. Since surge actuators and the standard chain-suspended type weight distribution systems don't play well together, I'd recommend an e2 system from Fastway, part # FA92-00-0600. This system is rated for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 250-600 lbs, and will offer proven weight distribution performance along with sway control that works great against mild to moderate sway. Boat trailers don't' typically have too many sway issues, so this system will work perfectly for you. The Reese # RP66072 strait-line system you'd looked at would be overkill in my opinion, and it wouldn't work well because the chains would prevent the surge coupler from actuating correctly.

Because your boat trailer doesn't have an A-frame tongue, you'll also need a pole tongue adapter, part
# EQ95-01-5950. The adapter will provide a location for the trailer frame brackets for the spring bars to attach.

You'll also need a 2 inch trailer ball like # A-90. A 1-7/8 thin walled socket will be needed to install the trailer ball. If you don't have one or can't borrow one, we offer one as part # EQ70-00-4800.

If you click the provided link, you can view a video where my buddy Randy will show how to set the system up.
