Hitch, Wiring Harness, & Brake Controller for 2016 Dodge Durango w/3.6L

Question:

Hello, Im looking at putting a hitch on my 2016 dodge Durango citadel 3.6. I have looked under my dash and saw the trailer brake plug in and have seen the plug under the back bumper. I just dont know the right trailer brake control to use. Im looking at a 4000 lbs camper trailer. I also want to put a 4 and 7 pin plug at the bumper. If you can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I do like the redarc controller just dont know which one and do you sell a plug that will plug in to my factory wiring. Thank you for all your time and help.

Your Durango with the 3.6L engine has a towing capacity around 6000 pounds. If you do not already have a hitch and receiver I would recommend the Draw-Tite # 75713 Class-3 Max-Frame Trailer Hitch. Of the available hitches they are only rated for 6000 pounds towing, but you can improve that with a weight distribution system if needed. I also think the Draw-Tite's are made a bit more rugged. You can also have up to an 18" spare under the back with no problem. Finally, the installation is pretty simple. I have attached a video of the installation on a 2016 Durango. I like that it has a welded on tab for the wiring plug you will need. During installation you will need a torque wrench for a minute. If you can't borrow one from a neighbor you can add the Power Tools # PTW3001C wrench to your cart.

You will want to add connections for a 4-pole connector as well as a 7-pin connector for larger trailers. I recommend that you use the Hopkins # HM40975 bracket that will mount to the tab on your hitch and then the factory connector on your Durango will just plug into the back of it. When you are ready to plug those connectors together it is a good idea to put a little dielectric grease in there to keep moisture out and deter corrosion. If you don't already have some you can use Edlemann's # 11755 dielectric grease.

Be aware that these connectors will likely not work until Dodge turns on the tow package on your vehicle. You will have to take your Durango to a Dodge service center to have them “flash” the vehicle computer to activate the feature.

Finally you will need a brake controller for trailers equipped with brakes. You can use the Redarc # RED44FR brake controller. In addition to that also purchase the Redarc # RED77FR connector for your Durango. I have attached a video of this unit being installed in a pickup truck to give you an idea of what is involved. If you have ever had a vehicle with an aftermarket brake controller you know there is no good place to put them except that one spot guaranteed to bang into your left knee. This system fixes that and look good.

One last thing, if you don't have any hitch balls or ball mounts, you may want to consider the etrailer # 989900 kit.
