Recommended Weight Distribution System for Small Enclosed Cargo Trailer

Question:

Hi I’m looking at the blue ox distribution hitch for my 2018 7.5x29 lightening enclosed trailer what one would work? And is there a disadvantage with going with the heaviest duty tongue weight one I can? Thanks

For the best performance, you'll want to match the system you use to the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. Typically, a system is rated to be effective for a 200-500 tongue weight range, and ideally you'll want the fully loaded tongue weight of your trailer to fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the system you choose.

If you choose a system with a capacity far greater than the trailer tongue weight, the trailer will ride like a buckboard. If the system isn't' rated high enough, you can damage the spring bars and the system will be completely ineffective.

The Blue Ox # BXW1503 SwayPro you'd looked at is rated for 1000-1500 lbs of tongue weight. The next lowest rated system is the # BXW1003 for 750-1000 lbs. Next lowest is # BXW0753 for 550-750 lbs.

Your first step will be to determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer. I'll link to an article that explains a few ways to do this, one way is to use a tongue weight scale like the etrailer # e99044 to determine the trailer's tongue weight.
