Agility Brake Controller Applies Voltage to Trailer Brakes After Coming to a Complete Stop

Question:

Most of the time after I come to a complete stop I see the controller showing 5 or 10 percent until I start to drive again. Is this normal?

I spoke with my contact at Hopkins and he stated this is normal for the brake controller. When at a stop the control will send back a minimal amount of power.

If you think it is sending back too much power or it starts behaving strangely there are some things you can check. Make sure that your brake controller is mounted within the range indicated in the instructions, linked for reference and that it is not tilted or turned to one side or the other. That could cause the controller to apply too much or too little voltage or apply voltage when it should not be.

You will also want to make sure that the trailer and vehicle side connectors are clean and free of corrosion. Corrosion could cause a short that could be drawing power when it should not be.

To test the controller itself you will need to sever the blue wire a few inches from the back of the controller. Then use a circuit tester like # PTW2979 if needed to test the end of the blue wire coming from the back of the controller. It should only show power when you use the manual override. If it shows power at any other time then the controller is bad and it will need to be replaced.
