Comparing Roadmaster And Blue Ox Flat Tow Components For 2020 Ford F-150

Question:

Hi, I just bought a 2020 F-150 and want to flat tow it behind my 2021 Winnebago Adventurer 29B which is 30ft and has a 5000 pound hitch. Can you tell me what I will need if I go Blue Ox? If I go RoadMaster? Im retired and dont have a big budget so I want something affordable but quality. Thanks for your help.

I would be happy to recommend the parts needed to flat tow your new 2020 Ford F-150 behind your 2021 Winnebago Adventurer 29B but first you will need to confirm the weight of your F-150 as they can weight between 4090-5684lbs depending on which model you have. Since your Adventurer has a trailer hitch receiver rated for 5000lbs, if your F-150 exceeds that you will need to reach out to Winnebago to find out if there is a heavier duty trailer hitch receiver option for you.

Moving on to the components need to flat tow, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

Starting with a Roadmaster option I recommend Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # RM-524431-5 which will pair up perfectly with the Roadmaster BlackHawk 2 All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar - Motorhome Mount - 2" Hitch - 10K # RM-422. You will also need the Roadmaster 64" Single Hook, Straight Safety Cables - 8,000 lbs # RM-645.

For a Blue Ox option I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # BO74FR which will pair up nicely with the Blue Ox Avail Tow Bar - Motorhome Mount # BX7420 which includes safety cables from having to purchase them separately.

For tow bar wiring for the Roadmaster option I recommend the Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - 7-Wire to 6-Wire Straight Cord # RM-152-98146-7, and for the Blue Ox Option I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. Installation for both of these kits will be identical, with the only difference being one has a straight cord and the other a coiled. The reason for a different style cord is that the Blackhawk 2 has channels for the cord to run through to keep it from dragging on the ground, while the Avail does not meaning a coiled option is best.

Since the cost of both systems in pretty close, I recommend the Roadmaster option due to the Blackhawk 2 having non binding arms allowing you to unhook your vehicle from your RV even when you are parked on un-even ground.

Lastly for a supplemental braking system I recommend the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR due to its easy install and since it is completely removed when you are done flat towing it can be used in multiple different vehicles.

You will more than likely need a high-low adapter to level the tow bar to your tow vehicle so I have included a link to a helpful article that goes over how to measure for the correct adapter, and a link to all of our high-low adapters for you to take a look at.

I included installation videos for each of the products mentioned below for you to take a look at.
