The Dexter 12-Inch Electric Brake Assembly Left Side, part # 23-105, is for the left side (drivers side) of the trailer. The Dexter 12-Inch Electric Brake Assembly Right Side, part # 23-106, will be the right side (passengers side) of the trailer. The smaller brake shoe should be facing the front of the trailer.
I would remove the hub and drum assembly and make sure the seal, and bearings (greased) and races are installed correctly. Then, when installing the hub and drum on to the spindle make sure everything is aligning on the spindle correctly. With the hub on the spindle you will then install the outer bearing making sure it is seated in the outer race. Next, install the washer and the castle nut and slightly tighten the castle nut til it stops or becomes snug to seat the bearing. Finally, do the final castle nut adjustment to make sure your hub and drum is adjusted correctly to the spindle.
I am including a link to a FAQ page on installing a hub and drum assembly on a trailer and a link to a video of a hub and drum assembly being installed on the trailer.
I would then check the brake adjustment after all of the above has been completed. I am including a link to a video of an electric brake assembly being installed on a trailer. It will show starting at the 1:55 mark how to adjust the brake drums.
