Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier and Anti-Rattle for Off-Roading with a 1992 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Question:
Im looking for a 20x48inch carrier to use behind my 1992 Jeep Cherokee on camping trips. I will be doing a decent amount of off-roading while getting to our camping spots so I need a carrier that will really stay put with no rattling. I like the look of this Curt #C18145 but Im concerned that it will rattle because it uses the adaptor to fit into 2inch receivers. Does anyone know what the fit is like for a 2inch receiver? Or any other recomendations for carriers that I should look at?

The shank on accessories that fit into your 2 in trailer hitch receiver are slightly smaller than 2 inches so there will always be some movement. What you will want to do is use an anti-rattle device. There are a couple of options that will work well to limit if not eliminate movement.
Take a look at the Quiet Hitch, # RM-061. This is a simple yet very effective design. I included a video link showing how it works. Similarly we have the Blue Ox Hitch Immobilizer, # BX88224. It is a similar idea but with 2 u-bolts for vertical and horizontal movement. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.
Since you will be going off road I recommend going with a carrier that is designed for 2 inch receivers rather than one that requires an adapter. The larger shank will help with shock from the road, or off the road. Curt has a 22-1/2x49 inch carrier, # C18113 that is only for 2 inch hitches.
Even with an anti-rattle device and a 2 inch shank I advise you to take it slow and reduce the amount of jarring and shock as much as you possibly can because cargo carriers are not meant for extreme off-roading but taking it easy and they should be just fine.
