Trailer Hitch Setup For 1960 GMC Fleetside Pickup Truck
Question:
Hi, I have a 1960 GMC fleet side with an 8 ft. Bed. The frame rails are 41.5 inside to inside with the standard c channel frame. Im looking to tow a 1960-1965 era 13-15 ft. Canned ham camper. Do you have anything that will mount up? I want to leave the rear bumper on so it would need to be a down style. Thank you

Since there is not a custom-fit hitch receiver for your 1960 GMC C/K fleetside, you will want to go with a universal weld-on receiver. The Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Service Body Trailer Hitch Receiver # 41990-07 is a popular option for custom vehicles. This is a 2" receiver and fits vehicles with frames under 44"; it has a maximum weight capacity of 16,000lbs and a maximum tongue weight of 1,600lbs. This does have a 7" drop from where the brackets attach to the frame of the vehicle.
If you take a measurement and determine that 7" drop will not work, then you could look at the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Service Body Trailer Hitch Receiver # 41990-16, which does not have any drop from where it attaches to the frame of your vehicle. If necessary, you could always get custom brackets made in order to mount this exactly how you want it. This also has a maximum weight capacity of 16,000lbs and maximum tongue weight of 1,600lbs.
For a ball mount, I recommend the Brophy Ball Mount for 2" Hitches # BM20. This is extended more than the typical ball mount, giving you a 13-1/4" distance between the hitch pin hole and the ball hole. This is rated for 10,000lbs max towing weight and 1,000lbs max tongue weight. For a 2" ball, go with # 63845, this is rated for 7,500lbs. For a 1-7/8" ball go with # C40002, this is rated for 3,500lbs. If you do not have trailer wiring, I would go with # 18252; this will tap into your real taillight wiring.
The hitch receivers mentioned above are recommended to be installed by a professional fabricator/welder. I have attached demonstration videos below.
