Does Surge Coupler Need to Be Replace if Trailer is Converted to Electric Brakes

Question:

I have a 1998 boat trailer with surge brakes that I would like to convert to electric. Do I need to replace the part of the actuator that hooks over the ball? That is the part that moves to activate the surge brakes. This is an Atwood actuator and I believe the model # is 85778. Thanks for the help!

It isn't necessary to remove the existing hydraulic coupler, but you'll want to come up with a method to prevent the coupler from articulating. Many hydraulic couplers have a hole on either side that allows you to install a cross-bolt to prevent the movement, or you could tack weld the lockout so it stays on all the time and prevents movement.

If this isn't an option, you could certainly replace the coupler using a 2 inch coupler for a 3 inch channel frame member like Demco eZ Latch, part # DM15000-52. I'll link you to an article that runs through the process of adding electric brakes to a trailer.
