Snow Chain Recommendation for a 2007 Mercedes GL450 with 275/55R19 Size Tires/Wheels
Question:
Would the Thule K-Summit XXL K77 be the most appropriate snow and ice solution for my 2007 Mercedes GL450 with 275/55R19 M+S tires? Would I need any special adapters? On all 4 tires or would just 2 be adequate? If 2 tires, front or rear my instinct tells me front so you have steering control, but I think the AWD puts more power into the rear tires? How obsessive do you have to be about taking the chains on and off if you are driving on roads that have patches of snow and ice covered and stretches of clean road? I have never driven with chains before, any special considerations?

The first thing I would recommend you do is check the owners manual of your 2007 Mercedes GL450 to see if there are any restrictions on snow chain use.
In an all-wheel drive vehicle you will want to at least put one set of chains on the front wheels. Like you said, that way you have traction on the wheels that do the steering and the majority of the braking.
Hills are also managed better with chains on the front wheels instead of the back. We had a snow chain rep tell us that when going down a hill even more of the weight of the vehicle will be on the front axle of the vehicle so in order to effectively brake chains on the front is better in that situation.
Also, when going uphill chains on the front will pull the vehicle up the hill as opposed to if they were on the rear where they might cause a vehicle to lose control if traction is lost.
The biggest thing to consider with snow chains is the speed rating. When installed, you are limited to 35 miles per hour as the maximum speed.
As far as driving on dry pavement with them, in small doses this will not affect the chains. However, you should note that the chains will wear out much quicker this way.
