Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver To Tow Small Trailer With 2017 BMW X3

Question:

I own a 2017 BMW X3 and wish to add a towing hitch for light towing 11 Whaler - less than 1k lbs. In addition, I occasionally need to move a larger but empty boat trailer with brakes that lock out in reverse. The actuator has a solenoid to prevent the brake locking in reverse, but this requires a 5 pin connection. Is there a harness you offer for this and are there wiring instructions for my vehicle. If not, Im told there is a way to manually override the actuator during parking when braking isnt needed with a 5 7/16 bolt. Where does that bolt goes in the Tie Down Model 125 actuator? If that works, I can buy the 119250KIT harness kit. As mentioned, this would be just to move an empty trailer. The trailer loaded would exceed my vehicles towing capacity. Thanks

I would be happy to recommend a trailer hitch receiver for your 2017 BMW X3.

I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13316 which has a 2" receiver, maximum tongue weight of 350lbs, and maximum trailer weight of 3500lbs. In our experience we have found the powder coat finish on the Curt hitches to be toughest which will keep the receiver looking great for years to come, and it is made in the USA. The Curt # C13316 has a hidden cross tube which means that you will only see the receiver once installed as you can see in the included picture.

Now since you are planning on towing you will need to add trailer wiring and a ball mount, hitch ball, and hitch pin and clip.

For wiring the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector and Installation Kit
Item # 119250KIT you were looking at is a great choice that will give you the 4-way connector you need to power the lights of the trailer.

To override the braking function of the Tie Down Model 125 Actuator on your trailer you can insert a 5” x 7/16” bolt or screwdriver through the upper hole on the side of the actuator to block movement of the actuator when you do not need brakes, or you can use the Curt Trailer Connector Adapter - 4-Way Flat to 5-Way Flat # C57187 which will plug into your 4-way connector and will tie in to the reverse light wire on your tail lights to allow you to back up the trailer if you would rather not use a bolt.

Lastly I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900 which includes two ball mounts, two hitch balls, two hitch pins and clips, and a carrying case.

I included installation videos for all of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
