Ball Mount with a 12 Inch Drop for a Motor Home Towing a Tow Dolly

Question:

I have a class A motorhome. The 2 in hitch is rated at 5000#/500# tongue. The distance from the bottom of the RV receiver to ground is 28 in. The tow dolly recommends an 18 in height to the top of the 2in ball. The RV is not loadedit is winterized at this time. The tow dolly will apply 100# on the tongue. I can not find engineering drawings with dimensions for the bars to know how the drop is measured. Should I order the 10inch or 12inch bar?

Expert Reply:

Drop is measured from the top of the receiver opening to the top of the other receiver opening in the case of a high-low adapter like # RM-048-6 which actually has a 6 inch drop. However, these adapters cannot be used with a tow dolly per the manufacturer specifications.

What you can do is use a ball mount with 12 inches of drop, # AMSC12. For a ball mount drop is measured from the top of the receiver opening down to the ball platform like in the FAQ I have included. With this ball mount you also get an added benefit since this is a cushioned ball mount and will absorb some road shock. For a compatible ball you will need one with a 1 inch diameter shank like # C40004.
