How to Install the Hopkins Backup Sensor System Using an OEM 7-Way

Question:

Hi, could you explain in more details how we would connect the backup sensor to the 7-way connector on my 2020 Toyota Tacoma SR5? It seems more logical to get the power at the 7-way connector than running a wire to the tail light since it’s immediately next to the sensor. I saw a similar question in the QandAs from another pickup owner but the answer wasn’t detailed enough. The second question is can we get an extended wire to place the audio emitter inside the truck cabin? I have the short 5 ft bed which means I probably need at least 10 ft to tuck it cleanly along the side of the truck all the way inside the cabin. Im trying to figure all the parts I need, the costs and effort involved. Thanks for your help and happy holidays!

For the Hopkins Backup Sensor System, part # HM60100VA, you would only need to make the connections through the OEM 7-way connector of your 2020 Toyota Tacoma. There would be no need to run any wires to the taillight.

To connect to the 7-way, you will need to pull the plug off of your 7-way and locate the reverse light wire and the ground wire. Connect the red wire of the sensor system to the reverse light of the 7-way. This is usually in the center position of the 7-way. Of course, using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 will let you know for sure.

The black wire of the sensor system will connect to the ground wire of the 7-way, which is usually in the 7 o'clock position.

As for the actual way of connecting them, use the included quick connectors as shown in the installation video below at around the 1:45 mark.

Finally, if you do not have enough length of the audio emitter wire, then Hopkins suggests you give them a call for more at 1-800-835-0129.
