How to Select the Correct Weight Distribution Hitch Depending on Trailer Weight

Question:

Im in the market to purchase a trailer, and I want to purchase a weight distribution sway control hitch. But since I dont own a trailer yet...should I wait until I buy one? or can I buy say a 12,000 GTW and will that work on any trailer under 12,000 or do I need to buy a specific one? so Lets say later I buy a trailer with a gvwr of 8,000 lbs I own a 2021 chevrolet silverado 2500. do I need to get a different WDS?

That's an excellent question, and the short answer is that you should wait until you have a trailer before getting a weight distribution hitch, as knowing its GVWR and loaded tongue weight is important to get best overall system. The reason is, if you get a system that doesn't have the needed capacity, it won't be effective, and a system that is rated too highly will give you a stiff and possibly bouncy ride.

So in order to choose the best weight distribution system you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle (if there is any) of your tow vehicle, which in your case is a 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500.

The tongue weight is typically between 10% and 15% of your trailer's GVWR but you'll want to verify it by using a scale such as the etrailer Tongue Weight Scale # e99044. From there, simply add on the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle and you'll have your TTW.

For example, I really like and highly recommend the Fastway e2 weight distribution hitches because they are the best overall value. They combine a high level of sway control and ease of use at a more cost-effective price than other options. So, if you were going with the e2 system, and found your TTW was 750 lbs you would want the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-1000.

Or if you found it was 1,100 lbs you would want the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-1200.

I have added links below to each of the Fastway systems so you can find the right one based on your TTW, and each will require a hitch ball, either 2" Hitch Ball # EQ91-00-6080 or 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # EQ91-00-6120.

I have also added links to a video review and a couple help articles on weight distribution if you'd like to take a look.
