Troubleshooting Tandem Axle Trailer With 12k Dexter Axles Wearing Inside Of Tire
Question:
Hello, my dual tandem with 12k dexter axles has irregular tire wear on the driver side rear axle. Both tires are wearing considerably fast on the inside tread of the tires. I recently put new tires on and am experiencing the same irregular wear already. What could be causing this? The other side of axle isn’t having these issues. And I think the bearing is still tight. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

There are a few things that could be causing one side of your tandem axle trailer with 12k Dexter Axles to wear the inside of the tire on one side.
First you will need to check all of the hardware that secures your suspension components for oblong holes that indicate wear that could be causing the axle to be misaligned, and visually inspect the leaf springs and equalizers for wear. You will need to replace any worn components.
Next you will want to make sure that your trailer is not being overloaded, which since you have tandem 12k axles I highly doubt it is, and that the axles have not been flipped. The bow in the axles should be facing towards the deck of the trailer so when weight is added it straightens out.
Lastly you will want to make sure that the tires have ST on the which designates a Special Trailer Tire. A trailer tire is designed with a stiffer side wall so you will want to make sure you the tire is aired up to the max pressure which can be found on the tire.
I included an article for you to take a look at, and if you find an worn suspension components that need to be replaced just send me a picture of them and I would be happy to help you find the correct replacements.
