A brake controller is not a vehicle specific item, you can use any brake controller on your Grand Cherokee. However, some controllers are easier to use and more reliable than others.

The Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885 is the brake controller I recommend most frequently. The controller is very easy to use and has proven to be extremely reliable in the long term. It is also very highly rated by our customers and the product and technical support offered by Tekonsha is second-to-none. I also recommend the Tekonsha P3, part # 90195. The more user-friendly display which offers at-a-glance diagnostics is a very popular feature of the P3.

Since your Grand Cherokee has the OEM 7-way, Jeep should already have ran a wire from the 7-way to the under-dash area of the cab to carry the output circuit of the brake controller. Look under the dash for a green wire that is bundled up either near the emergency brake pedal or behind the kick panel to the left of where your ankle would be while driving. Our Brake Controller Install Kit, part # 5506 can be used to install the controller.

The controller would mount under the dash within easy reach of the driver. The blue controller wire would connect to the green wire found under the dash, the black wire and white controller wires would be extended with the cable included in the kit. The black wire connects to the positive battery terminal, via the 30-amp breaker included in the kit. The white wire would connect to the negative battery terminal and the red wire would connect to the cold circuit coming off of the brake stoplight switch above the brake pedal. Use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and probe the wires exiting the switch, until you locate the circuit that only shows current when the brake pedal is pressed. Tap the red wire into this circuit.
