Control Trailer Bounce of Homemade 5'x8' Camper Trailer

Question:

I built an off road camper on a 5x8 trailer with a 3500lb Dexter axle. I did a spring over axle conversion for ground and tire clearance. The trailer is finished, but in my opinion tends to bounce excessively . It tows level and the camper design is pretty balanced. Ive lowered the tire pressure which helped, but could still use some more softening. Im open to suggestions on how to remedy the bounce. Ive shopped at etrailer for years, love your products and customer service. Thanks so much.

There could be a number of reasons, jointly and separately, the can cause trailer bounce. First, is your suspension parts rated for near your actual use. If your axles are rated for 3500 pounds, and your springs are rated for 3500 pounds (together) but your trailer only weighs 1500 pounds, you are going to experience a rough ride. Overly large tires will not help. Improperly loaded trailers can have an effect. Do you have 10 – 15% of your load being carried by the tongue? Could moving the axle further backwards help?

While the changes mentioned above might help, installing gas shocks will manage spring movement and improve the ride of any trailer. I would recommend installing the Lippert # LC281255 shocks designed for loads up to 3500 pounds that also have a 2-3/8” axle.
