Tail Lights Failing and Water Intrusion - Which Is Best Replacement?

Question:

Two weeks ago, I found that my right turn signal wasnt working after a camping trip. I replaced both bulbs and it worked again. When we replaced the bulb on the left side, we noted that the base of bulb was corroded and that there was some rust on the assembly see attached photo. After my latest camping trip, I noted the left turn signal wasnt working so I opened it up. The light bulb was broken on top and was filled with water we had driven through a heavy rain. What could be going on here? Do we need to replace the entire assembly? Quick note: I did replace the trailer battery about three weeks ago, moving from a regular deep cycle lead acid battery to a deep cycle AGM battery. Not sure if this is related at all.

Your tail light failures are almost certainly related to water intrusion. The water is probably coming in through cracked lenses or failed caulk / sealing where the tail light housing meets the camper body. Since your bulb sockets are rusted you are certain to have more issues and now is the time to replace them entirely. Since you are replacing them you should consider LED lighting that is brighter.

If you email me back with a picture of your current lights and measurements I can recommend a fit for you. The Bergman # 30-92-001 lights you selected measure 8-1/2” X 4-1/2” in size. If you like those it will be an easy swap. Keep in mind that these lights assume you have a separate license plate lamp. If you need the light to have a downward white light for your plate I will need to recommend a similar one with that function.

You might also consider the Optronics # TLL160RK lights which are LED and submersible.

I have included product links to both and a video review of the LED's.
